PLDT named as Philippines’ most valuable brand at US$2.6 billion

PLDT Inc. (PLDT) is the most valuable brand in the Philippines based on an independent 2023 study by Brand Finance, a London-based business valuation and strategy consulting firm.

With a 2% annual increase in brand value to US$2.6 billion, the performance of the country’s largest integrated telco contributed to the brand capturing a higher market share of the fiber industry, which led to a 45% improvement in year-on-year revenue.

Besting other brands in telecommunications, banking, and food service, PLDT was cited by Brand Finance for its consistent focus on innovation as a driver to improve customer service and propel the nation towards becoming a financial and technology hub.

PLDT’s sustainability initiatives were also recognized. The Brand Finance report indicated that the brand posted the highest Sustainability Perceptions Value among all brands listed in its rankings at US$222 million.  Brand Finance cited the use of carbon fiber technology for cell towers and the deployment of solar roof top panels leading to a reduction of over 137 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

“PLDT greatly appreciates the latest and prestigious recognition from Brand Finance for being conferred as the Most Valuable Filipino Brand this year. This inspires us more to continue providing the vital connectivity that powers our digital economy, enabling us to help transform the country into a globally competitive and digitally-empowered nation,” said Alfredo S. Panlilio, President and CEO of PLDT and its wireless subsidiary, Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart).

“This recognition clearly shows that our efforts to proactively create brand loyalty, awareness, associations, and maintaining international standard of our products and services among our stakeholders are paying off,” Panlilio added.

Brand Finance also lauded PLDT’s deployment of carbon fiber cell site towers, an environmental initiative that seeks to reduce the amount of carbon dioxide produced by up to 70%, as compared to using traditional steel towers. Carbon fiber towers also use less land space, reducing the need for land repurposing.

“We sincerely thank Brand Finance for this distinction – a testament to our ardent investments in the fiber industry and good corporate governance,” Panlilio said.  In support of the government’s digitalization goals, the citation also reinforces PLDT and Smart’s commitment to bridge the digital divide – a mandate of the Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) Digital Infrastructure group, where Panlilio sits as a founding member.

PLDT and Smart’s efforts recognized by Brand Finance are among the broad range of initiatives undertaken by the Group in its continuing drive to elevate customer experience and become the region’s leading ESG telco. These objectives are two of the five pillars of PLDT and Smart’s multi-year transformation launched in 2022, in response to the rapidly shifting market conditions in the Philippines.

#PHDigicon2022: “When I think about BOUNDLESS, I think that’s Magic Johnson!”

After two years of holding the country’s most prestigious and one of the most sought-after thought leadership events in the Asia-Pacific Region virtually, PLDT Enterprise held the Philippine Digital Convention (PH Digicon) last October 27-28, 2022, face-to-face at the Marriott Grand Ballroom with a simultaneous broadcast online.

Highlighting the 2-day convention was the live interview with the legendary basketball icon Earvin ‘Magic’ Johnson who strongly relates to the PH Digicon 2022 theme of BOUNDLESS. Hosted by PLDT Group Corporate Communications Head, Cathy Yap-Yang, Johnson fondly shares, “When I think about Boundless, I think that’s Magic Johnson!”

Raising awareness

In 1991, Johnson officially retired from his basketball career following the announcement of his diagnosis with HIV. In the same year, he founded the Magic Johnson Foundation, one of the most recognizable philanthropic organizations around the world today, which serves as a single-disease organization that works to raise funds for community-based organizations dealing with HIV/AIDS education and prevention programs.

Looking back, Johnson recalls the stigma and discrimination that used to rule the disease and how people talked in “hushed voices”. Now, people can openly talk about and discuss HIV/AIDS–all in the name of raising awareness of the disease.

Johnson’s ‘retirement’ didn’t hold him back to do what he loves most when he came back to play in the 1992 All-Star Game and won the All-Star MVP Award. He was also a part of the ‘Dream Team’ that won the Olympic gold medal in Barcelona during the 1992 Olympics.

“When I look at our team and our achievements, we changed the world when it comes to the NBA and when it came to basketball,” he says. “What we were able to accomplish in Barcelona, the way that the world accepted us, we’ve never seen anything like it. We won the gold medal, but we changed the game of basketball around the world forever. And I am happy to be part of that.”

Raising the next generation of entrepreneurs

PLDT Group’s Cathy Y. Yang talked to PH Digicon 2022 headline speaker,

Earvin “Magic” Johnson, about his life and legacy

Johnson is also the founder and CEO of Magic Johnson Enterprises, a global empire with a wide range of business endeavors that range from sports ownership, food service, to media and entertainment. He may have come a long way from bringing coffee shops and cinemas into Urban America, but he remains committed to his mission of creating jobs and opportunities for minorities and women-owned firms. When asked about retirement, the NBA Hall of Famer laughingly replied, “I am not built to slow down. I am a worker; I love to work, [and I bring] passion to my job every day.”

To prepare the next generation of dreamers and entrepreneurs, the NBA Hall of Famer, businessman, and philanthropist advised them about having a positive attitude despite setbacks, the importance of believing in one’s self, and having mentors–a role that he continues to play for many businesses, athletes, and his fans.

“My life is boundless. When I think of my journey, that’s the word I would use. I did everything that was not supposed to be done. When I think about boundless, I think that’s Magic Johnson! I was the first to go through a lot of doors, a man of color. Trust me, you can do it. Everybody out there, you can do it, you can have it, you can go do it, it’s all up to you.”

30 years later, after countless successful ventures, he shared, “Today, Magic’s court is the business world.”

Huawei donates $200,000 for PLDT’s CSR

Chinese tech giant Huawei has donated $200,000, or about P10.11 million, to PLDT Smart Foundation (PSF) to help fund the corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs of PLDT Inc. and Smart Communications Inc.

The CSR initiatives for funding to be determined by both PSF and Huawei will include disaster response, rehabilitation and recovery, promotion and enhancement of education in the country, environmental conservation, and the use of technology in health services.

“I would like to thank Huawei for the $200,000 donation to PSF, which will go a long way in supporting our CSR programs like education, disaster relief, environment, telehealth, and many more,” PSF chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan said.

PLDT and Smart have been longtime partners with Huawei.

PSF and Huawei’s partnership started years ago when Chinese tech giant donated disaster relief equipment, such as tents, rechargeable lights, and other tools, for PSF’s disaster response program.

It has also contributed 13 sets of school-in-a-bag with Huawei laptops for Smart’s education program, and the recent telehealth equipment for Makati Medical Center and Cardinal Santos hospitals.

Huawei vice president Daniel Guo said the company intends to contribute more to the country through its support to the programs and initiatives of PSF.

Huawei is a leading global provider of ICT infrastructure and smart devices.

It operates in over 170 countries and regions, serving more than three billion people around the world.

“The initiatives were chosen to align with the program sectors of PSF, as well as to highlight the technology solutions of Huawei. These programs are also aligned with Huawei’s overall CSR strategy,” PSF president Ma. Esther Santos said.

“Moving forward, PSF projects will try to inject technology solutions enabled by technology companies Huawei and PLDT-Smart. This is also aligned with PSF’s vision-mission of a connected, empowered, progressive Philippines,” she said.

PSF, which serves as the social outreach arm of PLDT and Smart, has created programs focused on education, livelihood and social enterprise, disaster response and recovery, youth, arts, and sports development.

PLDT Enterprise aims rise of SD-WAN, SASE

PLDT Enterprise is seeing software-defined wide area network (SD-WAN) and secure access service edge (SASE) architecture as two of the most in-demand technologies for businesses in the next few years.

In PLDT Enterprise’s recently concluded Tech Talk ON-AIR, Vice President and Head for PLDT Enterprise Fixed-Core Business Solutions Gary Ignacio said that SD-WAN has already reached its inflection point, accelerated by the new market dynamics. “The enterprise market has fully matured and has now embraced SD-WAN as their wide-area networking technology of choice. We’re anticipating its sustained momentum and growth over the next few years,” he said.

SD-WAN enables businesses to interconnect their network of branches and users through a highly-intelligent, software-driven platform, leveraging all available network underlay technologies such as MPLS, fiber broadband, LTE and 5G. This could help industries, such as banks, to simplify network management, optimize data traffic flow, and enable highly resilient, always on connections.

“Close to two-thirds of our local banks are pursuing transformational projects to enhance their digital capabilities and that number just continues to increase,” he added.

Likewise, he also stressed that PLDT Enterprise recognizes the importance of data security, and as such, is pioneering SASE to ensure a fully secure ecosystem where privacy and protection policies are fully enforced. “SASE will continue to get a lot of traction as companies put in place the right technologies to be able to connect and secure, not only their physical locations but their entire user base and end-devices as well. The PLDT Group has established a very strong foundation for this, out of our internal cybersecurity capabilities and best practices, and this will be further enriched by our strategic partnerships from the incumbent and emerging leaders in the field”

Other industries which have been benefitting from these two technologies include the retail sector and the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, among others.

ePLDT President and CEO and SVP and Head for PLDT and Smart Enterprise Business Groups Jovy Hernandez assured the company’s unbreakable commitment to providing digital solutions that will help businesses build a solid foundation amid the COVID-19 crisis.

“Over the last decade, multiple technologies have come to the fore and a lot more are emerging that will revolutionize the way we do things. And it is our aspiration at PLDT Enterprise to become every organization’s technology partner who can create the right mix of innovations and solutions which can deliver real value to their business,” said Hernandez.

“It is much more than just bandwidth. We strive to answer the needs of businesses today for a business-grade internet connection, the need for accessibility for on-premise and cloud applications and to manage multiple locations so that they can become truly resilient in this new age of business.”

PLDT Enterprise has been providing resilient connectivity for the business industry through bandwidth solutions such as BEYOND FIBER, Branch-in-a-Box, and PLDT SD-WAN.

BEYOND FIBER is designed to be three times more reliable for businesses which comes with a minimum speed equivalent to 90 percent of the subscribed bandwidth at 90 service reliability. This service promise currently remains unmatched in the industry.

Branch-in-A-Box, meanwhile, is a platform built for businesses that need to connect, protect, and manage multiple locations through easy to deploy and easy to manage ICT solutions that already come seamlessly stacked.

PLDT Enterprise’s TechTalk ON-AIR aims to discover the best practices of industry leaders in fueling their business growth by tackling the development and the presence of e-industries.

Hernandez said that it is a way of empowering customers and viewers with the information they will need to succeed.

“We have several events lined up for the year and we can expect more meaningful discussions and insights as there are technologies that we should be looking at to put all of these together,” he said.

MVP Bossing 2020 Dr. Carl Balita shifts to digital learning

Dr. Carl Balita, a multi-awarded entrepreneur, corporate trainer, and founder of Carl E. Balita Review Center (CBRC)

PLDT Enterprise has recently launched its MVP Bossing Awards campaign to inspire enterprises to rediscover and reinvent their businesses today to successfully thrive in the future. This year’s theme, “Rediscovery, Reinvention,” aims to convey a message of hope, and in recognition to and show appreciation for local business owners who are overcoming the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Instead of the usual awards night gathering, this year’s MVP Bossing now takes form as a digital campaign in deference to social events shifting to virtual space given the global health crisis.

For aspiring MVP Bossing Dr. Carl Balita of the Carl Balita Review Center (CBRC), the pandemic, while it did catch him by surprise because of the challenges that faced him and his business, made him rethink about shifting his business to a digital space.

“There were many realizations for this year, and one of them is that we never thought there were many opportunities offered due to the health crisis we all faced,” Dr. Carl Balita shares.

With the imposed community quarantine measures, CBRC—the number one review center with 120 branches locally and internationally—saw the need to shift its review classes digitally. A long-standing partner of PLDT for several years, the fortified partnership between CBRC and PLDT strengthened the digital capacity of CBRC to enable students to continue their learnings despite the challenges of the global pandemic.

Dr. Carl Balita, CBRC’s founder and a multi-awarded entrepreneur and corporate trainer, says that the services that CBRC offers is beyond what is expected. “We have made available all our analog books into digital format, transforming them so that anyone has access to these materials.” He adds that “the shift to e-learning has left a positive impact to our many branches of CBRC nationwide, a decision we are glad we made.”

If there is any learning, he, an educator for decades has realized from the pandemic is that “we also do service but we also have to be a good follower. It is no longer just about work, results, and outcomes, but also about the processes.”

He says that the future is now flexible. “It is not about profit, but being more humane. It is also now about rediscovering one’s purpose. More importantly, the organization now has to repurpose.”

Dr. Carl Balita admits that his greatest assets are the people around him. “You’re not doing this business alone. Do not take these challenges alone. I am fortunate to have people surrounding me who are my most cherished gifts. And others should realize that too. People around you will help you through.”

Jovy Hernandez, ePLDT President & CEO and SVP & Head for PLDT and Smart Enterprise Business Groups commends aspiring MVP Bossing Dr. Carl Balita. “When CBRC availed of PLDT’s BEYOND FIBER connectivity solutions, it was clearly an appreciation of the importance of going beyond in servicing CBRC’s students with quality classes without risking their health and safety,” he stated. “We remain committed in supporting the efforts of schools and learning institutions for e-Learning, and we applaud CBRC’s ongoing efforts for a virtual learning space.”

CBRC is the first and only ISO certified company of its kind in the country. It has received multiple awards from the DTI and PFA—pushing it to become a brand leader with physical presence in almost all major cities in the Philippines.

Accelerating Business Transformation with ePLDT’s Centers of Resilience

In this year’s first all-virtual Philippine Digital Convention (PH Digicon 2020), PLDT Enterprise specifically designed and developed a breakout session that aims to share business insights, global best practices and innovative digital technologies that enable organizations to respond, recover, reinvent and reemerge as industry leaders during these trying and unpredictable times.

Carrying the theme, “IMPACT”, the recently held PH Digicon 2020’s objective is to go beyond just being an avenue of intellectual and technical discourse, but to also inspire attendees to leverage on technology and heed the call to make a positive impact on society and in the process contribute to the formation of a stronger and more resilient nation moving forward.

Resilient Companies Win

Product Management Head of the Disruptive Business Group of PLDT Enterprise Amil Azurin started by stating that evidently, the pandemic redefined the business landscape across all industries and in all directions. Disruption at different stages have been felt by every person, industry, and country. Resilience therefore is now top of mind for most CEOs today, and if done right, it can spell the difference between winning and losing in the coming months ahead.

“History has shown that companies who deliberately and purposely developed capabilities to face and handle disruptions  are most likely to thrive,  or in other words, resilient companies win. These outliers, respond immediately to safeguard itself from dangers and difficulties, they plan ahead to recover and they innovate and reinvent themselves to outperform their peers and ultimately emerge as market leaders,” Azurin said.

He also noted that six months after the lockdown, most companies have addressed the immediate needs of their organizations like enabling work from home and keeping employees safe and adopting new ways of working.  Businesses are now dealing with critical operational issues like how to effectively  engage with a predominantly more digital customer base,  automating manual backend processes to make the supply chain flow smoother and faster, and how they can fortify and enhance cybersecurity posture and capabilities, to name a few.

He further emphasized that the process of building resilience also includes leveraging on the capabilities of a trusted technology partner like PLDT. Furthermore, he encouraged everyone to leave the complexities to PLDT and make PLDT an integral part of the ever-evolving transformation journey. “Within reach are digital technologies, domain expertise and global best-practices that can help organizations be more agile and be more resilient.”

Redefining Business Resilience with ePLDT

During the Breakout Session, PLDT Enterprise – through its ICT arm ePLDT - highlighted the capabilities, business benefits and transformative values that the different “Centers of Resilience” such as Data Center, Managed Operations Center and Security Operations can bring to the Enterprise  market.

Simplifying Multiple Business Complexities

Digitalization plays a huge role in economic resilience. Rizel Raganit, Product Manager of PLDT, says that business-critical applications that are residing in sensitive IT infrastructure such as servers and databases, should be located, stored and maintained  in a secure, protected and managed environment to efficiently perform its task. And VITRO Data Center is best suited for this mission.

VITRO Data Center remains to be the preferred collocation service facility of choice for Global Hyperscalers, Digital Content Providers, telecommunication operators and various Enterprises.

Its proven track record of adhering to global standards and sustainability initiatives, maintaining and achieving service level availability levels, growing numbers of certified technical experts and innovative culture have undoubtedly fortified its stature as the leading and largest Data Center facility network in the country.

VITRO’s 10 Data Center facilities that are strategically located across the archipelago and having an aggregate capacity of over 9,000 racks and total power capacity of 70 Megawatts, continues to support and enable the needs of organizations to transform their business continuity and resiliency capability as we all move forward and face the new normal.

Bernice Pineda, Business Development Manager for Cyberspace, ePLDT meanwhile points out that cyber resilience requires more than technology solutions that can block attacks. Preventing an attack is important but businesses need to be prepared for the eventuality that an attack can get through.

“It is important to predict our risk of attack, detect compromise as soon as possible, and to be able to respond and mitigate attacks as needed,” Pineda shares.

Rai dela Torre, ePLDT Head of Business Development, delves further into the proactive monitoring  solutions of ePLDT for businesses in the country. He cites that 43% of customers still rely on precarious manual eye balling and tracking of machine performance and this is done with different tools, report formats, and trackers.

Industry Solutions Manager at ePLDT Paul Inocencio discusses that recent events have brought about the rapid adoption of digital business tools in order to increase productivity while working remotely through increased automation and collaboration. The cloud has never been more relevant today than it was before. From video conferencing and online collaboration to real time sales monitoring, sales engagement, and office functions. Inocencio talks about the facets about business to make automation simpler and successful. Business tools may simultaneously be used virtually, helping professionals achieve their goals wherever and whenever they may be.

Disruption and Resilience

The disruptions felt this year due to the pandemic brought new meaning to the term business resilience. The adaption of innovative technology solutions, embracing a more agile and flexible work culture and adherence to a safer but more efficient new ways of working have made enterprises, and their employees, more optimistic about business growth prospects in the near future.

With the establishments of meaningful partnerships and deliberate collaboration with ePLDT, industries nationwide can look forward to a more safer, stronger, competitive and resilient future.

The Philippine Digital Convention (PH Digicon 2020) was organized by PLDT Enterprise, the B2B arm of the largest and only integrated telecommunications company in the Philippines.
