Huawei: Digital Innovation Never Stop for a Greener Intelligent World

Ken Hu, Huawei's Rotating Chairman, speaking at HAS 2022

Huawei plans to boost investment in innovation to build new products, to enhance and accelerate new technologies. The company held its 19th annual Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen from April 26 to 27.

For more than 30 years, Huawei have been innovating nonstop to create value for our customers and society. Innovation has become a core part of Huawei's DNA. Despite considerable operational challenges over the past few years, we have continued to steadily increase our investment in R&D. For nearly a decade, our strategy has been to re-invest at least 10% of our annual revenue back into R&D. Last year, we invested 22%. Huawei's Rotating Chairman Ken Hu said during the event.

Hu went on to discuss the specific initiatives that Huawei is working on to realize its vision for the future. "We are currently focusing on three areas: strengthening our approach to innovation, equipping all industries with the tools and knowledge they need to go digital, and helping build a low-carbon world."

According to him, Huawei sees two major trends: all industries are going digital, and the world is setting its sights on low-carbon development. “Needless to say, no organizations these days are asking themselves whether or not they ought to go digital. They're more concerned about how to go digital and how to do it well.” Said Hu.

In Huawei’ view, the ICT and finance industries were first-movers, so their transformation goes deep – all the way down to their core production systems. Industries like electric power, fuel, and manufacturing are using digital technology to solve production challenges, whereas the digital journey of industries like real-estate, construction, and agriculture has only just begun. Because these industries are at different stages of the transformation process, they naturally have different concerns.

For the past 10 years, we've been going through our own digital transformation. We've gained a lot of valuable experience along the way, Hu said.

Moving forward, Huawei is taking active steps to boost its business resilience and ensure steady development. "We have to keep the ball rolling through nonstop innovation, creating value for customers and society," said Ken Hu. "We look forward to working more closely with our customers and partners to build a greener intelligent world."

Huawei: Attracting world-class talent with world-class challenges

Huawei kicked off its 19th annual Global Analyst Summit in Shenzhen. Huawei's Rotating Chairman Ken Hu said that the company will continue to boost investment in innovation to build new products and enhance and accelerate new technologies.

"At Huawei, when we talk about innovation, the first thing we think is people. We hope to attract world-class talent with world-class challenges, and work together to push the limits of science and technology," said Hu, referring to the Top Minds recruitment program that the company launched on its website.

"We don't care where you’re from, where you graduated, or what you studied,” he continued. “As long as you have a dream for the future and believe you can make it happen, we want you to come and join us. We provide world-class challenges, a powerful platform, and all the resources you need to explore the unknown."

Moving forward, Huawei is taking active steps to boost its business resilience and ensure steady development. "We have to keep the ball rolling through nonstop innovation, creating value for customers and society," said Ken Hu. "We look forward to working more closely with our customers and partners to build a greener intelligent world."

Huawei's Rotating Chairman Ken Hu

Dr. Zhou Hong, President of Huawei's Institute of Strategic Research, said that "everything we imagine today is very likely to be too conservative – too little – for tomorrow. We have to meet the future with bold hypotheses and a bold vision, and throw caution to the wind as we push to break through bottlenecks in theory and technology. This is the only way forward." He outlined ten challenges that Huawei hopes to address moving forward.

Two scientific questions:

Ÿ   How do machines perceive the world, and can we build models that teach machines how to understand the world?

Ÿ   How can we better understand the physiological mechanisms of the human body, including how the eight systems of the body work, as well as human intent and intelligence?

Eight tech challenges:

Ÿ   New sensing and control capabilities, e.g., brain-computer interfaces, muscle-computer interfaces, 3D displays, virtual touch, virtual smell, and virtual taste

Ÿ   Real-time, unobtrusive blood pressure, blood sugar, and heart monitoring, and strong AI-assisted discoveries in chemical pharmaceuticals, biopharmaceuticals, and vaccines

Ÿ   Application-centric, efficient, automated, and intelligent software for greater value and better experience

Ÿ   Reaching and circumventing Shannon's limit to enable efficient, high-performance connectivity both regionally and globally

Ÿ   Adaptive and efficient computing models, non-Von Neumann architectures, unconventional components, and explainable and debuggable AI

Ÿ   Inventing new molecules, catalysts, and components with intelligent computing

Ÿ   Developing new processes that surpass CMOS, cost less, and are more efficient

Ÿ   Safe, efficient energy conversion and storage, as well as on-demand services

Huawei said, most Asia Pacific countries have very clear and forward-looking digital strategies. As the Asia Pacific region goes digital, a skilled ICT workforce will be critical. The region has a unique advantage in this area because it has a younger population than the US or Europe. Accelerating the development of ICT talent in the region will require concerted efforts from governments, businesses, and people from all walks of life.

In the Philippines, Huawei also had several programs for cultivating the local ICT talents, such as ICT Academy, Seeds for the Future, covered the Philippines for years, benefited over 9000 ICT students, according to Daniel Guo, the Vice President of Huawei Philippines.

66% of People in ASPAC and Japan Believe Bots Will Succeed Where Humans Have Failed with Corporate Sustainability

People around the world are demanding more progress on sustainability and social efforts and are looking to businesses to step up, according to a new study by Oracle and Pamela Rucker, CIO Advisor, and Instructor for Harvard Professional Development. The No Planet B study of more than 11,000 consumers and business leaders across 15 countries found that people are fed up with the lack of progress society is making towards sustainability and social initiatives, want businesses to turn talk into action, and believe technology can help businesses succeed where people have failed.

People from Asia-Pacific and Japan (JAPAC) want businesses to step up sustainability and social efforts

The events of the past two years have put a spotlight on sustainability and social efforts, with people worldwide disappointed with the lack of progress and calling for businesses to step up. Below are some key findings from the JAPAC region.

·        95 percent of people believe sustainability and social factors are more important than ever and 81 percent said the events over the past two years have caused them to change their actions.

·        94 percent respondents believe society has not made enough progress. 40 percent attribute the lack of progress to people being too busy with other priorities, 43 percent believe it is the result of more emphasis on short-term profits over long-term benefits, and 37 percent believe people are too lazy or selfish to help save the planet.

·        50 percent believe businesses can make more meaningful change on sustainability and social factors than individuals or governments alone.

·        75 percent are frustrated and fed up with the lack of progress by businesses to-date, and 91 percent believe it’s not enough for businesses to say they’re prioritizing Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) they need to see action and proof.

·        89 percent believe businesses would make more progress towards sustainability and social goals with the help of AI, and 66 percent even believe bots will succeed where humans have failed.

The events of the past two years have put sustainability and social initiatives under the microscope and people are demanding material change. While there are challenges to tackling these issues, businesses have an immense opportunity to change the world for the better, said Pamela Rucker, CIO Advisor and Instructor for Harvard Professional Development. The results show that people are more likely to do business with and work for organizations that act responsibly toward our society and the environment. This is an opportune moment. While thinking has evolved, technology has as well, and it can play a key role in overcoming many of the obstacles that have held progress back.

It's never been more critical for businesses to invest in sustainability and ESG initiatives, as people don’t just want to hear about it they’re looking for decisive action and are demanding more transparency and tangible results, said Juergen Lindner, senior vice president and CMO, Global Marketing SaaS, Oracle. Business leaders understand the importance, yet often have the erroneous assumption that they need to prioritize either profits or sustainability. The truth is this is not a zero-sum game. The technology that can eliminate all the obstacles to ESG efforts is now available, and organizations that get this right can not only support their communities and the environment, but also realize significant revenue gains, cost savings, and other benefits that impact the bottom line.

Given Asia Pacific’s large share of the global population and emissions, climate vulnerabilities, and technological and financial strengths, the global fight against climate change will be won or lost in Asia Pacific. It’s imperative that we take action on climate change and businesses have a narrowing window to lead the way, said Will Symons, Asia Pacific Sustainability and Climate Lead, Deloitte. It is great to see organizations like Oracle helping businesses to step up and prioritize sustainability. The study results show people want businesses to prioritize progress on sustainability and are willing to reward those who lead. To do this organizations must re-think how they use technology to shift from ambition to action on sustainability commitments while ensuring transparency and accountability to all stakeholders.
