Earth+Lens 2023 promotes conservation of Philippine forests via HUAWEI P60 Pro lens

Manila Bulletin’s annual photo exhibit that highlights the beauty of Mother Nature returns anew with this year’s theme putting the spotlight on the Philippine Forest. Aptly titled, Fragments of Entirety, MB’s  Earth+Lens aims to magnify the natural beauty of the Philippines alongside spreading the importance of environmental sustainability.

This year’s Earth+Lens will highlight the grandeur of the micro and macro elements of the Philippine forests with its theme ‘Fragments of Entirety’. The 2023 photo exhibit which opens today at SM Aura in Taguig City aims to spread awareness on what needs to be protected and call-to-action for the public to start a pledge on forest protection, dealing with the threat of the daily decrease in Philippines’ forest cover that endangers wildlife and affects forest-dependent communities.

“Through this year's Earth+Lens photo exhibit, we encourage the Filipino nation to reflect on our collective responsibility to protect and conserve our forests. These forests hold within them a tremendous wealth of biodiversity. Many species of amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles that reside in our forests are endemic, as they exist in no other country. Likewise, there are thousands of species of vascular plants that are also endemic. As stewards of our country's share of the world's natural wealth, let us do our part in conserving these precious fragments of the entirety of God's creation.  We thank our partners --- HUAWEI, the Department of Tourism and SM Aura --- for joining us in this vital endeavor,” said Herminio “Sonny” Coloma, Jr., Manila Bulletin Publisher.

Sharing the same goal of strengthening and further promoting the country's eco-tourism, the Manila Bulletin collaborated with the Department of Tourism (DOT) for this annual photo showcase. The Department of Tourism is a staunch supporter of Manila Bulletin’s Earth + Lens as this year’s edition marks the third year of the annual partnership.

Joining again on this year’s edition is another long-time partner of Manila Bulletin’s Earth+Lens, HUAWEI. Similar to previous partnerships, HUAWEI will enable the content producers with tools to capture the magnificence of Philippine forest via its latest phone model, the HUAWEI P60 Pro.  It has the latest tech capabilities that can capture vivid micro and macro images which befits Earth+Lens’ goal to highlight pieces that make up a woodland. The HUAWEI P60 Pro’s Ultra Lighting Telephoto Camera allows taking pristine-looking photos from great distances, may it be day or night. A perfect feature to showcase forest scenes from afar whether under gloomy weather or broad daylight. Its Super Macro gives a new level of detail that can help unravel beauty hiding in plain sight.

“HUAWEI has always prioritized sustainability in the advancement of our products. This partnership has given us the opportunity to yet again be part of an important endeavor that promotes the conservation of Philippine forests by sharing stunning images caught by the lens of our HUAWEI P60 Pro. With the awareness of the rich and vibrant flora and fauna, we hope that this inspires everyone to help protect the environment,” said Peter Peng, Country Head of HUAWEI Philippines Consumer Business Group.

Photos to be exhibited are taken by select photographers from Manila Bulletin and known photographers in the field, following immersive forest photowalks in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Staying true to the campaign’s core mission, photos captured by the latest HUAWEI P60 Pro are printed on fabric canvas using eco-solvent ink.

The comeback of the on-ground activity happened today with Manila Bulletin Earth+Lens to officially launch the event in partnership with the DOT, and HUAWEI, who have long been advocating eco-tourism and supporting Earth+Lens for several years. The exhibit is being held at SM Aura which is also the official venue partner for this year’s edition.

Immerse in the magnificence of the country’s forests through the photo is on displays during the Earth+Lens 2023 exhibit only on May 27-28 at SM Aura, BGC, Level 3 Atrium.

Rex Education’s innovative program ‘Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon Continuum’ recognized at UNODC Conference

During the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Conference recently, at Novotel Manila, Quezon City, Rex Education bared its ‘Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon (BPE) Continuum’ for strengthening drug-abuse prevention.

UNODC’s Conference gathered organizations, policymakers, and prevention implementers for discussions on addressing drug-related problems in the country. Under the theme “Prevention Digest: Strengthening the prevention strategy and family-based initiatives in the Philippines”, UNODC encouraged individuals and groups to share drug-abuse prevention responses that are health-centered and based on family intervention. The agenda tackled the healthcare system, evidence-based programs, and Philippine experiences in family-centered interventions.
During the 3rd day of the event, REX was among the government and non-government organizations who shared their experiences with prevention programming, as well as the impact and influence of these initiatives.
Taking a whole school approach to reform initiatives
BPE officially launched during the January 2021 Annual Educators' Congress, where 400 private and public schools expressed interest and intent in pilot implementing the framework.
In March 2021, pilot implementation for BPE began with 13 schools completing one implementation cycle. These schools were Marantha Christian Academy, St. Edward School, Canossa Academy Calamba, Ednas School, Cherished Moments School, Colegio de Santa Rita de San Carlos, Inc., Cabulay High School, San Andres Elementary School, Divisoria High School, Rosario National High School, Sagana National High School, Patul National High School, and Sinili Integrated School.
REX gave life to the portmanteau ‘Edukampyon’, a combination of the words edukasyon (education) and kampyon (champion) to mean champions of education. The BPE program is grounded in the Edukampyon advocacy: To engage duty-bearers and build their capacities for respecting, protecting, and fulfilling the right to quality education.
Pursuant to BEDP 2030, REX advocates a whole school approach that entails the collaboration of all members in a school community. The whole school approach recognizes that the informal curriculum is just as valuable as the formal one, highlighting the importance of providing learners with inclusive and safe environments beyond the classroom. This framework is meant to advance agendas on global education and reform initiatives such as health awareness, eradication of violence, and drug-abuse prevention.
The whole school approach also comes into play in promoting the six facets of the Filipino whole learner. REX has identified various indicators that should ensure a Filipino learner is healthy, safe, engaged, supported, challenged, and values-oriented. Across these indicators, there is a common theme that encourages school culture and leadership to promote learners' physical and mental health, implement policies relevant to civic participation, and equip students with the essential competencies for lifelong learning. Families and communities are recognized as a major part of this advocacy, as the success of a child's education largely relies on the effective collaboration of stakeholders advocating every learner's well-being.
Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon in support of UNODC standards
Based on the standards of UNODC, drug-abuse prevention is a significant motivator for children, young adults, and adults to contribute positively in their families, schools, workplace, and communities. Drug-abuse prevention at the school level focuses on the health and safety of children and youth, in a bid to encourage self-actualization that can lead to the realization of their full potential, prompting them to become productive members of society.
PHOTO CAPTION: Attendees of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime Conference pose for a photo at Novotel Manila, Quezon City recently, with the theme “Prevention Digest: Strengthening the prevention strategy and family-based initiatives in the Philippines”.

UNODC has found that developing a student's personal and social skills can prevent drug use and alcohol abuse. For children aged 10 and below, programs centered on improving resistance skills and self-control have been shown to reduce general problem behaviors in and out of the classroom. Several other factors can also influence discouragement of substance abuse, such as students' academic performance, commitment to school, and social opportunities.
To achieve these benchmarks, REX designed BPE as a three-tier implementation framework that will allow schools to conduct systematic assessments of their progress in the UNODC's domains. BPE encourages schools to work with their stakeholders, students, parents, and community members in the planning and implementation of activities and interventions that are relevant to UNODC's standards.
Bawat Paaralan Edukampyon as an exemplary school-community-family program for drug-abuse prevention
The BPE's pilot implementation allowed learners to learn about drug-abuse prevention through the collaborative efforts of their teachers, administrators, parents, and other stakeholders. In particular, parents reported feeling more engaged and knowledgeable of their children's school activities and priorities after participating in the BPE process.
The participating schools showed significant levels of involvement and support, having developed appreciation for the BPE framework. REX intends to leverage this support in fine-tuning effective BPE advocacies, communications, and education initiatives for more schools across the nation.
In doing so, REX was able to complement UNODC's standards on drug-use prevention. Placing value in partnership, emphasizing the importance of effective parenting, and delivering evidence-based prevention strategies proved to be the pillars that drove the success of BPE's initial launch. REX is committed to pushing BPE at a wider scale, in a bid to ensure children and youth become invulnerable and more resilient to drug use.

DoE awards contracts to SunAsia Energy and Blueleaf Energy for world’s largest floating solar project

PHOTO CAPTION: SEOCs turnover ceremony with Blueleaf Energy CEO, Raghuram Natarajan (4th from the right),SunAsia CEO and President, Tetchi Capellan (5th from the right),DOE Secretary Raphael P. M. Lotilla (7th from the right), Australian Ambassador to the Philippines, HE HK Yu PSM (6th from the right), Singaporean Ambassador to the Philippines, HE Gerard Ho Wei Hong (5th from the left), Senior Trade and Investment Commissioner (AusTrade), Christopher Lim (3rd from the left), Laguna Lake Development Authority General Manager, Atty. Senando Santiago (4th from the left), and ceremony guests.

SunAsia Energy Inc. and Blueleaf Energy have secured contracts from the Philippine government to build and operate the world’s largest floating solar project in the Philippines, which has a cumulative capacity of over 610.5 megawatts (MW).

The move is viewed as a milestone in the country’s energy sector, with the Department of Energy (DoE) issuing the first set of Solar Energy Operating Contracts (SEOCs) for a total 1.3 gigawatts (GW) in floating solar projects.
In September 2022, Blueleaf Energy, a stand-alone portfolio company of Macquarie, signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) during President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. state visit in Singapore. The company made a commitment to significantly increase its sustainable infrastructure investments in the Philippines. In partnership with SunAsia Energy, Blueleaf Energy is jointly developing the large-scale floating solar facility on Laguna Lake, spanning the growing cities of Calamba, Sta. Rosa and Cabuyao, and the towns of Bay and Victoria.
During the contract turnover ceremonies, Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla reiterated his promise to strengthen the renewable energy sector and declared the DoE’s strong support for the commercialization of floating solar facilities as an emerging technology.
Australian Ambassador HK Yu PSM and Singaporean Ambassador Gerard Ho Wei Hong were among those who attended the event at the DoE office in Makati City. The program echoed the need to accelerate the realization of the country’s decarbonization targets by 2040.
Raghuram Natarajan, CEO of Blueleaf Energy, said that “as an active investor in sustainable infrastructure in the Asia Pacific region, we believe the Philippines holds great potential to add significant renewable energy capacity to its energy mix and at the same time delivering green energy at an affordable cost compared to fossil fuels.”
The recent announcement of the removal of foreign ownership restrictions, Mr. Natarajan said, “is an important step in attracting the much-needed foreign direct investments in Philippine Renewable Energy (RE) sector to accelerate the energy transition for meeting the country’s decarbonization and net zero targets.”
After the signing of the SEOCs, Blueleaf Energy’s top executive said his company would push for cooperation among public and private stakeholders to ensure the successful development of the project.
This will “not only contribute to the country’s RE goals, but also spark green job growth locally during construction and the long-term operations of these floating solar projects, enable local supply chains through the manufacturing of critical components and bring about notable benefits to the local community,” Mr. Natarajan said.
The SEOC is a testament to the viability of this emerging technology. Tetchi Capellan, president and CEO of SunAsia Energy, noted that “land use is becoming a big issue for renewables.” "People are worrying about competing uses of land, and in some markets, you might struggle to find land,” Capellan said. “There is a strong incentive to build on water as the Philippines gears up for an ambitious 46 GW solar energy installations in 2040 and at the same time, increase power supply in the country.”
She said that this first 610MW floating solar project “is our collective legacy, our immeasurable contribution to the body of knowledge in the renewable energy space and to the growing solar energy installations worldwide.”
“Once built, we are certain that it will stand as one of the engineering wonders of the world. It will capture the imagination of developers, it will be published in multiple journals, shared in social media, visited by hundreds of practitioners, and studied by academics,” Capellan added. Since 2019, SunAsia Energy has been operating a testbed on Laguna Lake to study the behavior of waves, the movement of wind, the intensity of the sun, as well as the variability of the temperature in the locality. The wealth of experience has contributed to the growing knowledge of floating solar panels on the lake.
SunAsia Energy further explained that like land-based systems, floating solar panels generate electricity from the sun’s rays. But the bodies of water that these farms rest on also help to cool the panels, allowing them to be more efficient than terrestrial solar, according to the Environmental and Energy Study Institute.
Solar-on-water will definitely boost clean power as the world races to cut carbon emissions. Massive solar farms can now be found atop bodies of water in South Korea, Japan, China, Thailand, Singapore, and Portugal.
Developing solar-on-water projects, in the country’s largest lake, will help achieve not only the government’s ambitious decarbonization target but also much needed power to run industries, light homes, and energize cities.
More importantly, it will be a legacy of the Philippines to the global renewable energy space, SunAsia Energy said.
In the last two decades, Blueleaf Energy has developed and built almost 2 GW of solar capacity across the globe, including 250 MW in the Philippines. It currently has over 7 GW of solar, wind and storage projects project pipeline across the Asia Pacific region.
SunAsia Energy, a developer of sustainable solar energy in the country, has since its inception in 2013 partnered with various entities to develop solar projects including the 60 MWp Toledo solar project in Cebu and the 20 MWp Dagupan solar project in Pangasinan. About Blueleaf Energy

Blueleaf Energy is a portfolio company of Macquarie’s Green Investment Group (GIG), operating on a standalone basis. In the Philippines, Blueleaf Energy is managed by the Macquarie Capital operating group of the Macquarie Group.

P&G integrates sustainability in the way it does business

Procter & Gamble (P&G) Philippines continues to integrate sustainable solutions in its product manufacturing and business operations so that their trusted and superior products are produced and delivered in more sustainable ways from plant to shelves, and ultimately into every Filipino household.

P&G’s purpose begins with improving people’s lives with irresistibly superior products that are also sustainable. The Company aims to make responsible consumption possible by developing innovations, striving for a more circular approach in its supply chain, and providing alternative solutions for a more sustainable future.

Here are some of P&G’s recent solutions in product manufacturing and supply chain to make it a more sustainable journey from plant to shelf to every Filipino home:

FROM PLANT

Sustainable Manufacturing Practices

P&G is one of the largest players in the consumer goods industry in the Philippines. It has stepped up to integrate sustainable solutions in its Cabuyao plant, which manufactures most of P&G products sold domestically. It purchases 100% renewable electricity and is a zero-manufacturing waste-to-landfill plant. It recycles over 300 metric tons of non-residual waste every year.

Green Facilities

P&G’s LEED-certified Cabuyao distribution center houses energy-saving facilities that feature the use of roof skylights, roof ventilators, and automatic exhaust and supply fans that only run at specific times of the day to save energy during the cooler times of the day. P&G’s offices and plants have also started converting its use of fluorescent lights to LED light fixtures which use less energy than other types of light bulbs. The Company is reducing electricity consumption by utilizing motion detector devices in its lighting fixtures in the distribution center to eliminate the possibility that the lights will accidentally be left on in the mega-facility. These motion detector devices detect and measure movement inside the rooms in order to switch on lights when employees are inside and switch off lights when the rooms are empty.

Sustainable Packaging

P&G also integrates sustainable alternative solutions in its product packaging. Safeguard multipacks eliminated its virgin plastic overwrap packaging to 100% recycled paper carton material, saving 8,500 kilometers worth of plastic waste every year, equivalent to one thousand times the length of the world-famous Boracay shoreline. Herbal Essences Bio: Renew Collection also uses 25% post-consumer resin for its bottle packaging.

As they work on packaging innovations, P&G has also improved its product bundling packaging by converting single-use laminate-based bellybands and stickers to 100% FSC-certified papers, resulting in 66% less in bundling material usage and a 380,000 kg reduction in plastic waste.

TO SHELVES

Recyclable and Reusable Display Shelves

To further expand P&G’s efforts to reduce, reuse and recycle waste in its business operations, P&G launched its employee-led Project LESS program in 2021 to provide better and more sustainable alternatives to other significant but often overlooked retail materials such point of sales materials (POSM). The initiative resulted in the development of “Flexi-POSMs”, which are collapsible, reusable, and paper-based in-store displays. P&G’s flexi-POSM has a changeable visual structure that allows P&G brands to easily redesign and reuse the flexi-POSMs for other brand launches and initiatives.

TO EVERY FILIPINO HOME

Sustainable Delivery Solutions

P&G launched a regional sustainability partnership with a leading e-commerce company to recycle used cartons from its Cabuyao plant for use as last-mile packaging in e-commerce delivery. Cartons converted into honeycomb-like protective wraps are now being used as replacements for the previous plastic bubble wrap paddings. The honeycomb-like protective wrap reduces usage of single-use bubble wrap plastic while providing the same quality of packaging protection.

P&G’s beauty brand Olay also produced a “Ship-In-Own-Container” molded carton packaging for online purchases, eliminating the need for additional customization and last-mile packaging materials such as bubble wrap, fillers, and tape.

These efforts are a testament to P&G’s commitment to find ways to design for reduction, reusability, recyclability, and circularity in its manufacturing and supply chain operations.

P&G Philippines was recently recognized at the 2022 Asia CEO Awards with the Sustainability Company of The Year’s Circle of Excellence Award. The award is given to organizations that achieved important success in environmental progress and demonstrated leadership and commitment to sustainability.
